Stopping Ammonia Pollution in the Mississippi River Delta
Project summary
Healthy Gulf is a dedicated organisation focused on protecting and restoring the Gulf of Mexico and its surrounding communities. Through science-based research and policy, grassroots organizing, and public engagement, Healthy Gulf works to address critical environmental threats impacting the region, including the rapid and vast loss of wasteland, water pollution, and industrial expansion.
The proposed project, “Stopping Ammonia Pollution in the Mississippi River Delta,” aims to combat the rising threat of ammonia pollution in the Mississippi River watershed, which is a vital region supporting diverse wildlife, fisheries, and local coastal communities. As a result of industrial waste and a surge in ammonia production facilities, the area faces increasing degradation, including toxic algae blooms, hypoxic zones, and wetland loss. This project seeks to raise awareness, mobilize impacted communities, and hold polluting fertilizer companies accountable to mitigate the environmental impact of increased ammonia production and reduce the size of the Gulf Dead Zone.
