Bringing Shareholder Advocacy to Cancer Alley: Environmental Justice and LNG
Project summary
Louisiana is at the frontlines of the climate crisis, suffering disproportionately from coastal erosion, rising sea levels, floods, and severe weather patterns including hurricanes and deep freezes. The state is also home to the third largest natural gas production and the fifth-highest natural gas reserves in the U.S, according to the EIA. The public and private oil companies that operate in Louisiana are responsible for ongoing degradation to the local natural environment and community health, and by virtue of their fossil fuel products, affecting the global commons at large.
As You Sow’s project seeks to address the long-term effects state residents have experienced and bring greater attention and protection to this important landscape, and in the long run, help companies rethink decisions to build new LNG terminals.
As company shareholders, As You Sow seeks to demonstrate that shareholder advocacy, when applied to elevate community voices into corporate board rooms, will lead to results. This proof-of-concept grant proposal will focus on engaging with one community being negatively impacted by an adjacent, or proposed, LNG facility in Southwest Louisiana.
