Project: Building Accountability for Environmental Injustice through Legal Avenues

Project Implementation Location(s): Kenia

Project Cluster: Legal

Organization: International Lawyer Project (ILP)

Project Year: 2023 – 2024

Project Summary: The International Lawyers Project (ILP) highlights the increasing threats faced by indigenous communities worldwide, particularly in East Africa, due to unsustainable ‘green’ projects and inadequate legal safeguards, such as the absence of free prior and informed consent (FPIC). ILP proposes a twofold approach to address this environmental injustice: firstly, by providing legal support and capacity building to partner communities in Kenya and East Africa, including the Ogiek Peoples’ Development Program and the Narasha Community Development Group; and secondly, by collaborating with TRAFFIC to develop an Anti-Corruption Illicit Wildlife and Natural Resources Index, aiming to combat corruption nodes in wildlife trade through feasibility studies and advocacy campaigns. This initiative aims to empower local communities and ensure corporate and government policies align with conservation efforts.
