Project: Background Science, Stakeholder Mapping and Case Study Plan Development to Catalyze Corporate FW Target Setting in the Mississippi Basin, USA.
Project Cluster: Data & Standards
Organization: WWF-US, River Futures, and Environmental Initiative
Project Implementation Location(s): U.S.
Project Year: 2024
Project Summary: A disconnect exists between the desire for US companies to drive positive impact in their supply chains, especially around surface water and groundwater quantity and quality issues, and the science and infrastructure that currently can help drive company action through SBTN Freshwater (“FW”) target setting. This project led by WWF-US and local partners as the SBTN Freshwater lead leverages restricted Walton Family Trust funding to support work local to the Mississippi delta. Approximately 65% will support the work to develop the background scientific review for surface water, groundwater, and water quality for key sectors in the basin and just 5% will go directly to WWF for supporting this work and developing the case study workplan. Additionally, the current state of models (if any) in the basin (for surface water flow, groundwater, and water quality) will be outlined, and a convening of experts will provide collective expertise in building knowledge for the tool. At least 30% of the funds will directly support a local environmental NGO (Environmental Initiative) to focus on stakeholder mapping and engagement.
