2025 Impact Report: Building Nature into Business Foundations
17/06/2026
As I reflect on 2025, I am struck by the extent to which accountability for nature requires collaboration across many actors – civil society organizations, communities, companies, investors, policymakers, standards setters, and funders – working together to ensure that commitments lead to action and action leads to measurable outcomes. Strengthening that enabling infrastructure remains at the heart of the Accountability Accelerator’s mission.
As environmental risks slip down the global agenda, funding for nature declines, and public enforcement weakens, accountability matters more than ever. Through standards, credible targets, independent verification, legal action, civil society pressure and financial accountability, it creates the conditions for progress to flourish and endure.
Increasingly, we are seeing that accountability goes beyond compliance and is also a source of resilience and competitiveness. It helps companies identify risks earlier, make better decisions, build trust with stakeholders, and adapt to a rapidly changing economic and environmental landscape. It also helps investors, regulators, customers, and communities distinguish meaningful action from empty promises.
Throughout 2025, the Accountability Accelerator strengthened the systems, organizations and collaborations that are advancing corporate accountability for nature. Building on a total grantmaking portfolio of over $4 million across more than 50 organizations since inception, we convened over 500 stakeholders over 12 international meetings, and helped grantees secure over $1 million in follow-on funding to scale their impact. We also validated science-based target milestones for 14 companies, providing essential credibility for corporate nature commitments.
While we are proud of these achievements, our focus remains firmly on what comes next. The challenge now is implementation: accelerating adoption, strengthening accountability mechanisms, and ensuring that commitments translate into tangible outcomes for people and nature.
To maximise our impact, we are focusing our work across three strategic portfolios:
- Building an accountable energy transition rooted in equity and environmental justice
- Strengthening accountability for nature across global food systems, beginning with a focus on the U.S. Midwest
- Advancing sustainable and equitable ocean stewardship in global seafood systems
I am deeply grateful to our partners, grantees, funders, advisors, and supporters whose commitment and collaboration make this work possible. Together, we are helping build the foundations for a future in which businesses protect and create value for people and the natural systems on which we all depend.
